In his book ‘The Third Wave’ (Collins, 1980), Alvin Toffler, author of ‘Future Shock’, seeks to synthesise the surging waves of change sweeping across our world. In response, this paper is sharply critical of the symbol construct used and widens it to include the unconscious processes at work.
